After a 2-hour drive in complete darkness — coca chewing in our mouth, kids half-asleep in the back — we arrived at El Tatio just before dawn, one of the largest geyser fields in the world. And then it happened: the sun crested the 6,000-metre peaks on the horizon, and the entire valley turned gold.

Under the vast silence of the Sahara, we gazed upon one of the most breathtaking star-filled skies I have ever seen—an endless canopy of light that felt both humbling and eternal.

In the Amazon, we dragged ourselves up at 5:30am for a sunrise canoe ride, and somehow the whole family had actually slept. Before we saw anything, we heard it — howler monkeys warming up in the canopy, one of the wildest sounds in nature. Turns out dawn is when the jungle truly comes alive.
